We are an impact multiplier promoting thriving societies and nature.

Our vision is to create a world that we want to pass on to the next generation.

The Summa Foundation addresses global challenges that markets alone cannot solve, and helps promising solutions progress from early-stage innovation to lasting, scalable impact.

Many of today’s most pressing social and environmental challenges cannot yet be solved by markets alone. Promising solutions often exist, but they are too early-stage, too risky, or too unproven to attract commercial capital—despite their potential to deliver lasting impact at scale.

The Summa Foundation exists to close this gap. It operates as an impact multiplier to unlock, accelerate, and scale solutions that can deliver lasting change. By working alongside capital markets rather than apart from them, the Foundation helps move high-impact solutions from proof-of-concept toward long-term viability and scale.

The Foundation steps in precisely where commercial capital will not yet go. Our role is catalytic: we use grants and recoverable investments to reduce the risk in early solutions and prove them out, so that over time many can find a viable model and stand on their own. Where that is not realistic, we focus our philanthropy where it creates durable public good rather than ongoing dependency.

Financing lasting impact

The Summa Foundation only backs solutions with a credible pathway to financial sustainability at scale. For impact to last, we support models that can ultimately stand on their own, without long-term dependence on philanthropy.

For impact to be durable, it must ultimately rest on a viable business model or a payer at scale. The Foundation seeks to avoid long-term dependency on philanthropy, where impact risks disappearing once funding ends.

The Foundation acts as a change agent through three complementary channels:

Catalytic grants

Grants are central to the Foundation’s work and are used to unlock, accelerate, or de-risk initiatives. They are deployed with a clear purpose and end goal, often supporting solutions on a defined path toward commercial viability or sustainable financing.

Impact investments

The Foundation deploys early-stage, high-risk, high-impact investments where impact is the primary objective and capital can be recovered and redeployed. These investments can be complemented by technical assistance—non-financial support that helps partners build capacity, strengthen operations, and increase impact.

Thought leadership

The Foundation amplifies its impact by promoting effective solutions across its strategic themes and by advancing philanthropy within private equity. By sharing insights, demonstrating what works, and inspiring peers, the Foundation aims to catalyze broader adoption of impact-driven models.

Strategic themes

We focus on five themes that are critical to society and nature: Nature-based solutions, Sustainable Food, Circularity, Energy Transition, and Tech-Enabled Resilience. These are the same areas that Summa Equity invests in to address global challenges. Through its connection with Summa Equity, the Foundation gains access to deep sector expertise, global networks, credibility, and long-term engagement, significantly increasing the reach and effectiveness of its capital.
